I am sure that the popular, highly competeitive "Heroes of Hammerwatch" scene isn't going to be undone because a couple people got tired of grinding ore in order to purchase upgrades that have to also be earned through an agonizingly slow XP gain system. The game is badly gated on ore and XP.

Of course there is a grind. Building up your town takes a lot of ore, then you'll need gold to buy new stuff, level up to learn new abilities. You don't really have to grind, you just have to know how to spend your resources. If able, join some multiplayer lobbies and utilize their town areas, while saving your gold/ore. Always get shaftlocke pickaxe and alway use the alters that require you to sace a stat (if able) for the chance to get ore pickup.

It's a challenge mode. Grinding for power defeats the purpose. If you want to grind there are infinite ng levels in normal. Now that you say this I think the best option for tweaking merc mode would be a large gold bonus.
